Expertise

The research in the Cellular Systems group (CSys) is mainly focused on UMTS and its evolution towards 3.5G with the goal of increasing peak-bit rates and of improving spectral efficiency under differentiated Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for various internet data services. Research topics ranges from layer 1 (propagation and physical layer) over layer 3 (radio resource management and packet scheduling) to layer 5 and above dealing with the provision of applications and services to the end user.

During recent years the CSys has had formal co-operation with more than 10 domestic and international enterprises and has large experience in exploiting research results in commercial products and influencing standardisation through co-operation with private industry. In addition, the CSys has considerable experience from previous EU funded projects such as TSUNAMI (II), SUNBEAM, METRA and I-METRA.

Role

The CSys will contribute to a diverse portfolio of research, development and dissemination related issues to lead the proposed SURFACE project to a success. With its expertise in link and network level related assessment of MIMO transmit and receive technologies, and with long experience from RRM schemes for future releases of UTRAN, CSys will primarily contribute to the research activities in WP4, WP5, and WP6. Moreover, CSys will develop an air interface performance emulator (WP8) to show which quality of service improvements a user would experience when accessing an internet data service via the SURFACE. This emulator would be made accessible via the project web page, allowing anyone to test and experience the impact of unified air interface concept.
