INFO - University of Rome "La Sapienza", INFOCOM Department

Expertise

The activity of the Information and Communication (INFOCOM) Department is devoted to the study of the foundations of the information and communication principles and to their applications to Telecommunications and Remote Sensing, with a special attention to the fields of information theory, communications systems, networks, and signal processing.

The activities in the communication area include decision theory, detection and estimation, speech processing, game theory, cooperative networks, wireless communications (UWB networks, OFDM and MC-CDMA for W-LANS), MIMO systems, 4G network architectures for multimedia communications, traffic modelling and performance evaluation, integrated services broadband networks.

The department has been deeply involved in programs of the European Community and, specifically, its activities have been supported by IST, ESA and ACTS projects.

Role

INFOCOM have a strong expertise on the theoretical analysis as well as on the algorithmic development of novel radio interfaces for wireless systems, with specific reference to 3G, and beyond, cellular systems and WLAN. In particular, many recent papers co-authored by members of the group involved in SURFACE testify the background of the group on optimal coding techniques for MIMO systems and, more recently, on advanced strategies for the optimal design of the physical layer in multihop or ad-hoc networks. Therefore, within SURFACE, the INFOCOM team will primarily contribute to WP3, WP4 and WP5 to the development of a new air interface at the physical layer with self-reconfiguring capabilities.
