Nokia Corporation comprises four business groups: Mobile Phones, Multimedia, Networks and Enterprise Solutions. In addition, the company includes a corporate research unit, Nokia Research Center.

Nokia Networks is a leading provider of mobile and IP network infrastructure and related services. Nokia Networks aims to be a leader in IP mobility core, radio and broadband access for network operators and service providers. Nokia Networks also seeks to enable mobile multimedia and Internet applications, to achieve sustainable high value-added business with network operators and service providers and to become a preferred partner for major operators. In 2003, Nokia Networks represented approximately 21% of Nokia's net sales.

Nokia Networks has good understanding of the base station and network requirements of a WCDMA system. In addition, NET has had a strong role in the specification of UMTS for 3GPP. Also through other research NET has good knowledge and simulation know-how on link, cell and system level performance evaluation with multiple transmit and receive antennas. NET has earlier participated in IST work through METRA and I-METRA projects.

Role

SURFACE project will benefit of NET's practical experience in digital infrastructure in terms of base station implementation and cost evaluation and network architecture design and production know-how. NET will primarily contribute to activities in WP6 (Transmit and Receive Architecture Development) and in WP7 (System Performance Evaluation). However, NET will also have an important role in evaluating the practical constraints for studies of optimising transmit and receive schemes in WP3-WP5.
