TID - Telefónica Investigación y Desarrollo

Expertise

Telefónica is a major international telecommunications operator, with more than 100 M of customers, employing over 100.000 people. It is based in Spain, with overseas operations in UK, South and Central America and Morocco. Telefónica Investigación y Desarrollo (TID) is the corporate R&D centre for all the Telefónica branches and subsidiaries, with an over 1200 people permanent staff. It is committed to improving Telefónica's competitive edge by supporting the introduction of innovation. Its main work areas are information systems development, including network management and business planning, new service creation, strategic studies, network planning and new network rollout support. TID collaborates with industries, academia, standardisation bodies and relevant social entities, has been active in EU R&D programmes from their beginning, and currently takes part in several FP6 projects. TID gives R&D support to Telefónica Móviles, one of the world's largest mobile companies with more than 65 m of customers.

TID already participates in several mobile communications EU funded Integrated projects like WINNER, Ambient Networks, E2R, Magnet and Daidalos, and also on several STREP initiatives. It has developed a modular and flexible SDR platform named PRAGA, which allows the evaluation and prototyping of new radio interfaces, with demonstration capability for multimedia applications and services. Over this SDR platform a MIMO technology evaluation demonstrator is currently under development.

The unified solutions, as proposed by SURFACE, will facilitate the access of end users to new services, and hence will foster the growth of cellular operators service portfolio, as well as user fidelity and traffic consumption.

Role

The main role of Telefónica Investigación y Desarrollo in the SURFACE project is to propose, perform research and validate procedures for the application of MIMO techniques to cellular mobile communication systems, which provide an advantage in terms of radio resource reuse. The company involvement will focus on cell based and overall network techniques, both in new MIMO algorithms at link level and in Radio Resource Management.
